I am currently the President of FIBA Oceania, a member of the FIBA Executive and a member of the FIBA Central Board. I have also been appointed Chair, Coordination Commission FIBA Basketball World Cup China 2019.
I was Deputy Chair of Basketball New Zealand (BBNZ) from 2012 to 2014 when I resigned after being elected President of FIBA Oceania.
I have been thoroughly involved in basketball in New Zealand since playing for Canterbury from 1969 to 1974 being part of teams that won the National Club and Provincial Championships. I reengaged with basketball again in 1999 when I was asked to Chair the National Basketball League, which I did through until 2004. I was a seconded member of the BBNZ Board from 2003 to 2005. In 2005 I moved on to Chair the Board of the New Zealand Breakers from 2005 to 2010, and what a great success that has been!! I have also been involved heavily with fundraising for the Basketball Development Trust.
I grew up on a family farm in the middle of the Canterbury Plains. In 1971 my wife and I took over the management of the farm and converted it from an extensive sheep property to an intensive farming operation with sheep, crops and vegetables. We farmed on own account until 1989.
In 1988 my wife, Jenny, stood for Parliament in Ashburton and won to become the member for the region. She went on to become a Minister between 1990 and 1997 and then Prime Minister in 1997 and 1998. During that time I decided to take other options and moved to live in Wellington and work in the Financial Services sector. I had management roles with Westpac and ASB before resigning in 2007 to pursue my own interests.
Currently I describe myself as a businessman. I run our family development company and manage our investments. I manage my wife’s consulting company and oversee the Family Trust. I Chair Newpark Group, a investment, insurance and Homeloans business.
I spent 5 Years as chair of the Stellar Trust which worked to make New Zealand children aware of the risk of drugs and especially Methamphetamine. I am a Trustee of the Namibian Educational Trust which Jenny and I have set up to help educate approximately 800 children in the NW corner of Namibia.
Jenny and I have two married children. Our son Ben and his wife Chelsey and our 7 year old grandson and 1 year old granddaughter live in Sydney, after living in Shanghai for 5 years. Our daughter Anna and her husband Andrew live in Auckland with their two children aged 6 and 4 after working in Beijing for two years after 10 years in London.
I also try to fit in some golf, sailing and I enjoy road cycling to try and keep fit.
